The Science
We're going to be honest with you — because we think you deserve that.
Wrist strength alone won't make your shot harder. Most of the power in a hockey shot comes from your hips, core, and legs — not your wrists. Anyone who tells you a wrist trainer will add 20mph to your slap shot is overselling it.
So why does the Battle Stick exist? Because there are two things grip and wrist strength genuinely do matter for — and they're exactly what young hockey players struggle with most.
WHAT GRIP STRENGTH ACTUALLY CONTROLS
- Board battles and puck possession
- When two players fight for a puck along the boards, grip strength is a primary factor in who wins. The player who can squeeze harder and resist stick lifts longer wins the puck. This is the most direct, honest use case for wrist training in youth hockey.
2. Wrist snap speed and shot release
While wrist strength doesn't create raw shot power, it directly controls how quickly and accurately you release the puck. Research on wrist shot kinematics shows that joint angular velocity at the wrist is a key predictor of shooting accuracy. Stronger wrists = faster release and better placement.
3. Foundation for overall athletic strength
Research from Gary Roberts Performance found that grip training increases neural drive and core activation across all upper body movements. For youth players building their athletic foundation, grip work is especially valuable.
THE HONEST CLAIM
The Battle Stick won't make you an NHL sniper. It will help you win more hockey battles in the corners.
Board battles, corner fights, stick lifts, loose puck scrums — these are won by the player with stronger hands, better grip endurance, and faster wrist reactions. The Battle Stick trains all three.
WHY YOUTH PLAYERS SPECIFICALLY
Players aged 8-13 are in a critical window for developing motor strength and neuromuscular coordination. Most youth training programs focus on skating and shooting technique — which is right. But the hands are consistently neglected.
10 minutes a day. 4 exercises. Progressive resistance from 6lb to 25lb. That's the Battle Stick.
